About Timisoara

The city is located on the Bega river wich is one of the few navigable rivers in Romania. Throught history the city of Timisoara has been under difrent dominatios like the Turkish, Hungarian or Austrian all of these periods contributing significantly to the culture and infrastructure of the city. The first documentary attestation of the city is a bit controversial being placed by specialists either in 1212 or in 1266. In 1175 is mentioned the Timis County, but the sources don’t say wich is the economic and administrative center of the county. Also known as the Cetate – Castrum Temesiense located at the crossroads of commercial and military lines, becoming the main objective of the conflict between Austrians and Turkish armies and then lusted after by Hungaryan aristocracy. The town-planning of Timisoara developed around its fortified center starting in the 18th century. Between the years 1315 – 1323 King Carol Robert of Anjou makes Cetatea Timisoara his royal residence. The colonization of Banat makes Timisoara a real multicultural and multiconfessional center. The construction of the Bega Channel gives a powerful advantage to the economic and commercial development of the city. Timisoara knows a period of unprecedented blossom being named Little Venice in recognition of its beauty and importance. In 1919 Banat unites with Romania and the first Romanian administration is instaured in Timisoara. The postbelic soviet occupation marks the beginning of the communist regime wich ends in 1989 with the anti-communist revolution, revolution started in the city on Bega.

Timisoara is located at the intersection of the 45,47 northern latitude parallel with the 21,27 eastern longitude meridian being mathematically placed in the northern hemisphere at equal distance between the North Pole and the Equator and in the eastern hemisphere in the Central Europe timeline.

Timisoara is a multicultural city, influenced by various ethnic communities, especially he German, Hungarian and Serbian, but also by the Bulgarian, Italian and Greek. Cultural heritage and cultural diversity are strengths of the city. With over 12 professional cultural institutions, Timisoara is, after Bucharest and Iasi, the third cultural center of the country in terms of size and diversity of cultural offer. A great tradition is the theater in Timisoara, where the three state theaters (the first in Europe): the National Theater, Theater Hungarian and German Theater offer performances in Romanian, German and Hungarian. The three institutions share the same building, a symbol of the Romanian Opera.

The Banat Philharmonica completes the cultural offers of the highest quality keeping this way a tradition of the city wich has seen on its stages great names like : Franz Liszt, Strauss, Brahms, George Enescu and the premiere of Verdi’s Traviata on 9 february 1855.

The cultural patrimony of the town is completed by the Museum of Banat finished in 1872. This museum accommodates the largest collection of archeological items in Banat. The institution has different branches amongst wich are the Museum of Art, Museum of Ethnography, the Museum of the Banatean Village, a Violin Museum and the Museum of Knowledge, Technology and Communication. The Museum also holds the largest collection of birds and butterflyes in Eastern Europe. The cultural offer is completed by the Puppet Theatre, The Banat Ensemble, The City Library (1904), The Popular School of Arts, The House of Culture and many art galleries, publishing houses, charitable foundations and cultural associations.

Amongst the art galleries the most visited is the Calina Gallery located in the center of the town, a promoter of young art and a place where both timisoranian artists and consecrated artists expose their work.
